German apparel companies still mostly source from Southeast Asia

According to the sector’s professional association GermanFashion, the German fashion industry grew by two percent in 2014 – and that in spite of the crisis in Ukraine. Whilst there was a double-digit fall in exports to Russia and Ukraine, exports to the United Kingdom grew by 25 percent. And there is something else that is new: “Contrary to the assumption that the apparel industry is bringing its manufacturing back to Eastern Europe, the increase in the Far East continues unbroken, with a plus of around 7 percent, whilst Eastern Europe’s share, in contrast, went up by just 1.8 percent,” explains Gerd Oliver Seidensticker, President of GermanFashion. In particular, both India and Bangladesh managed to increase their share, whilst Pakistan found its way into the top ten for the first time.
